An ancient Greek silver tetradrachm from Abdera (Thrace) dating to approximately 140 - 50 BC. Abdera was a Greek city state in Thrace, founded allegedly by the hero and demi-god Herakles. It became especially prosperous in the mid-6th century BC, when neighboring Greeks migrated to it in order to escape Persian influence. It had a rich array of silver coinage, this being one such example. The obverse shows the head of young Dionysos facing right, wreathed with ivy and with band across forehead. The reverse shows Heracles standing left, resting right hand on club, left arm draped with lion skin and holding grapes and two narthex wands. Sear 1759 Width: 30 mm Weight: 15.95 g.
