An ancient Parthian silver drachm of Orodes I, dating to 90-77 B.C. The obverse shows the head of Orodes I with distinctive tiara. This coin was issued while his father, Mithradates II, was still alive. The reverse shows a bearded, cloaked archer, seated on throne and holding a bow in his left hand and bears the title 'who loves his father'. The legend, in slightly corrupt Greek, reads ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΝ ΑΡΣΑΚΟΥ ΦΙΛΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ ΔΙΚΑΙΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ ΦΙΛΕΛΛΗΝΟΣ - King of Kings, Arsakes, the beneficent, the just and friend of the Greeks. The coin references Arsaces, founder of the Arsakid dynasty and shows a bow, which was a prominent Parthian symbol. The Parthians used the bow to great effect, especially the mounted Parthian archer, who was able to retreat on horseback whilst firing an arrow backwards against the enemy - the so-called 'Parthian shot', later becoming 'Parting shot' in modern usage.
