An Ancient billon silver Roman Coin of Postumus, dating to approximately 259-268 A.D. The obverse with radiated bust, facing right. The legend reading in abbreviated Latin IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG. The reverse with Victory right holding palm and wreath. The legend reading COS IIII. Diameter: 21mm. Weight: 2.45g Provenance: ArtAncient Limited have acquired the majority of a large and eclectic coin collection, from the estate of a deceased Chester gentleman. The collection was formed from the 1940's-1970's. What makes the collection particularly exciting is the meticulous inventory that the collector kept, often recording the date and find spot in addition to the typology of the coin. Collectors will be aware that it is unusual to get such a positive sign of provenance going so far back in time, making coins from this collection a particularly good investment. Each coin comes complete with a card that includes all the details of the coin and the place and date of where the coin was found - this coin was part of the Hollingbourne Hoard found on 5th June 1959. This hoard consisted of around 5470 Roman coins dated from 218-282 AD, discovered in an urn in a field north of Hollingbourne.
