A beautiful European Bronze Age spearhead, dating to approximately 800 BC. The patination on this spear is exquisite. It is very well formed and preserved, symetrical and with robust mid-rib. Hollow shafted and drilled on each side, the spear would have once enjoyed a long wooden handle, now long perished. Such spears would not only have been used in battle by the Celts, but would also have been offered as dedications to the Gods or spirits of the place. Hoard deposits containing spears such as this have been found across Europe, in areas of spiritual significance such as hills, rivers and bogs. A fascinating piece. Length of spear: 4 7/8 inches. Provenance: British Private Collection, originally acquired on the German Art Market.
