A lovely Ancient English Medieval solid silver Penny of King Henry III, dating to 1247 - 1268 A.D. This coin originates from the famous Brussels Hoard, an enormous, enigmatic hoard of over 80,000 coins, discovered beneath a Brussels pub in 1908 and subsequently sold at auction. Scholars believe the Brussels hoard may constitute payment for European mercenaries used by King Henry III or alternatively, it may represent tribute to the Vatican. This coin shows the kings head on the obverse, with the legend reading HENRICVS REX III - King Henry III. Reverse with a long cross interspersed with triple pellets, the legend reading NIC OLE ON LVND - Nicole of London mint. Diameter:17.5mm. Weight: 1.5 g. Provenance: Ex. Brussels hoard, found 1908. Ex.
